Business Coach for Therapists & Private Practice Startup Consultant

Hey. I’m Meg.

For the purposes of this website (and for our lovely friend “Search Engine Optimization”), I’ll introduce myself here as a business coach for therapists & private practice startup consultant.

But just like you, I’m also so much more—as a therapist, as a person, and as a member of my community…

Depending on where we know each other from (if we know each other at all), you might recognize me as the host of the Mental Status Podcast, the owner of the antiworktherapist Instagram page & associated Substack publication, the owner of a 100% teletherapy self-pay practice for adults in Indiana, and now, the owner & primary counselor coach of Informer Coaching & Consulting.

I am also a wife, a step-mom, an aunt, a daughter… I’m a (slightly obsessed) cat mom, a joyful Crossfitter & yoga instructor, a runner, a creative daydreamer, a messy & sometimes spaced out multi-potentialite, a writer & self-editor, a lover of true cime and haunting documentaries, and someone who struggles endlessly to balance all of those parts of myself with the parts that want to do nothing but pour myself into my professional life.

It’s been a dizzying balance to strike, but the most important one yet—and one which I’ve based large parts of my coaching & consultation work upon. In this, I am working toward a life that isn’t sheared in half by my professional pursuits, while helping my clients strike the same delicate yet hugely important balance in their own personal & professional pursuits.

This is the part where I talk about how much you and I are alike.

Like, how much I understand the ups and downs of starting a private practice (I do), how much I relate to the feelings of guilt and nervousness when raising fees or leaving insurance panels (a lot), and how deeply I empathize with being burnt out and disillusioned as a therapist in today’s world (too deeply).

Here, I’ll talk about how I felt so betrayed by the mental health system as a young therapist, and how ill-equipped I felt to take on the challenges of successfully working for myself.

And the reason I know all of this is because like you, I’ve lived it. And through all of my pursuits—from the podcast to @antiworktherapist to this business—I’ve wanted nothing more than to find a way to make the mental health field feel more survivable as a provider in private practice. I wasn’t convinced that my professional fate was to be underpaid, overworked, always stressed, and giving 50% at best to my clinical work, when I wanted to be giving my 100%.

Balance in Private Practice is Vital to Long-Term Success

I’m no stranger to the hustle & grind lifestyle, and to be honest, I can’t stand it.

I have put a lot of time, energy, money, and emotional investment into “making it” and while process that works for some, it never really worked for me.

By the time I opened my virtual doors at my private practice, I was ready for a life spent in ease more than in distress. I wanted so badly to feel more balanced in my approach to my work and my personal life. While it didn’t happen overnight, I spent a LOT of time in that first year of private practice trying to figure out what I needed to do to bring my mind, body, and spirit more in line with each other—a project that is ongoing and ever-evolving as time marches on.

Questions you might have about me, coaching, or the work I do:

  • Business coaching for therapists is a place where private practitioners and entrepreneurial mental health professionals have the chance to get dedicated, personalized support, accountability, and experience-driven advice to help them make their business a place they love to be.

Put simply, business coaching is a relationship that is focused on your success as a therapist, where you can get feedback, advice, suggestions, support, accountability, and more to help you grow (financially, personally, professionally).

  • Well, first of all, I am a therapist myself! And I am actively practicing in my own 100% telehealth, self-pay practice, which I started in October 2021 and through which I earned over $100k in my first year of practice.

But—I didn’t do it without a ton of support and honestly, a ton of struggle. For the first full calendar year of my practice, I was actively involved in a year-long coaching container for therapists, where I learned to challenge my own shitty thinking around my capabilities and ability to be successful. I learned how to structure my policies, my fees, my schedule, and my self-care to support a truly revolutionary practice. And I became a much better therapist, business owner, partner, and community as a result of that experience.

I was also actively cultivating a therapist-oriented community on instagram via my page @antiworktherapist, where I’ve spent my time advocating for the more equitable treatment of our mental health workforce.

This business is a natural extension of much of my advocacy work, and is a culmination of my pre-therapy career experiences in content writing & marketing, as well as my clinical experiences working in non-profit & group counseling settings. I use what I’ve learned and what I’ve experienced to help my coaching clients create burnout-resistant practices that are grounded in practitioner-first policies & philosophies.

  • My coaching philosophy is make it easy, make it simple, make it fun.

While I like to have a roadmap for our work together, coaching calls with me can be as loosely or firmly structured as you need. Our calls are focused entirely on what you need help with, and may include brainstorming, mindset work, working on marketing & policy materials together, addressing unexpected or big changes, developing strategies, and more.

As my business grows, I am working actively on creating guides, templates, and video trainings for my clients to help with some of the more technical aspects of running a business, such as writing website & Psych Today content, figuring out SEO, working through policy changes, etc.

  • There are so many awesome, knowledgeable, and highly experienced business coaches for therapists out there. Honestly. I have a lot of respect for folks like Patrick Casale, Tiffany McClain, Kelley Stevens, and Felicia Keller-Boyle.

There are also a ton of well-resourced coaching programs—like Zynnyme and the Abundance Party—the provide a ton of super valuable content and resources for up-and-coming private practitioners.

So what makes me different? The same thing that makes any therapist or coach different from their colleagues—my approach, my personality, and my philosophy to coaching.

    My Approach:

Right now, I am focused on highly-individualized, boutique-style offerings for private practitioners who want dedicated 1:1 support. This means my time is limited and I can only work with so many folks at once. My approach is to give the type of support I wanted and needed when I was first starting out in my practice, but that felt unobtainable or like something that “other therapists” did.

    My Personality:

I’m a realistic optimist, with a voice that many friends have described as “calming enough to put someone to sleep” but surprisingly firm in its convictions. I swear (sometimes a lot), I’m not afraid to talk shit about the mental health industrial complex, and I have no interest in sugar-coating this work. I aim to celebrate the good shit and provide support through the tough shit.

    My Philosophy:

Simply put: my philosophy is that private practice is one of many ways to make a huge impact in the mental health world, and that those who want to make it a reality for themselves can do so—so long as they’re equipped with the right support, information, data, and resources.

If you’re a therapist looking to start a private practice, I am of the opinion that you’re already highly capable, driven, and likely to succeed. I don’t believe that you have to have a coach to be successful. I am also not of the opinion that seeking coaching means you don’t know what the fuck you’re doing (even if it feels that way).

In my coaching, I work off of the assumption that you’re capable and the philosophy that the well-being of our caregivers & healers is one of the most important factors in stemming the tides of the oncoming (and current-day) mental health crisis.

I believe that every therapist is capable of making their own decisions about how they want to structure their business—this includes their schedule, their policies, their fees, their speciality, etc—when they’re equipped with the right information to make such decisions. My goal is to be a resource in helping therapists access that information when they need it most.

  • I offer single-focus sessions, session bundles (4 or 8), and longer-term contracts.

You can learn more about my coaching services—including what to expect and what you get—on my Coaching for Therapists page.

If you’re ready to get started but want to meet me 1:1 first to make sure you feel comfortable, I’d invite you to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation call.
