Liminal Space

For therapists who want to move on

Liminal Space is a crossroads—the threshold between two distinct lives, paths, or identities.

it is fertile, neutral ground.

we can choose to fill it with distraction and anxiety, or we can turn toward it and open to the void of uncertainty.

the liminal space is not one you can force, push, or reason your way out of.

it does not respond well to pressure.

it is a space of discomfort and shifting truths—in its own way, on its own terms.

and the harder you push, the harder it pushes back.

for some, the truth of a “calling” or “dream career” is shifting seismically, and the tectonic movements are creating chaos and confusion.

for others, the truth of an identity or belief system is being called into question, which leaves a hollowness that feels untouchable by distraction, planning, or efforts at explaining the change away.

the liminal space is a grey neutral that holds no expectation, while the busy mind searches and scrapes for meaning or reason.

I don’t know what the liminal space holds for you.

I can’t force the change any more than you can.

Nor can I provide you with the answers to the questions that your liminal space begs.

I don’t know what your career change will look like, nor do I have any idea of what the future holds for you

What I do know, however, is that you’re drawn to exploring this space because of what being a therapist has meant to you. Because you don’t want to just rush headfirst into another space without giving this chapter of your life a proper ending. Because you hold grief and excitement in both hands and wish to give equal breath to these experiences, without having to rush your way through.

In the end, your next job title doesn’t matter all too much. At least not yet. What matters for you right now is knowing that it wasn’t all for nothing. What matters is know that what you’ve lost and gained in this particular season of your life goes far beyond job title, salary, or career path.

It goes straight to the heart, and your heart feels equal parts bursting and hollow. You have no idea what to do next. But you know you need space to give the possibilities breath.

You are home.
